GPC Weight Classes & All-Time Strength Standards
GPC competitions recognize four distinct equipment divisions: Raw (belt and wrist wraps only), Classic Raw (knee wraps permitted), Single-Ply, and Unlimited Multi-Ply.
1. Official GPC Weight Classes & Age Division Registry
The Global Powerlifting Committee maintains one of the most comprehensive international record matrices in strength sports, preserving the traditional twelve men's weight classes and ten women's weight classes that originated in classic mid-century powerlifting prior to Olympic weight-class restructuring. By retaining these historical categories—specifically the iconic 82.5 kg, 90.0 kg, 100.0 kg, 110.0 kg, 125.0 kg, 140.0 kg, and 140.0+ kg divisions for men—modern lifters can directly benchmark their totals against all-time legends from the 1980s through the 2020s.
Within every body-mass bracket and across all four equipment divisions (Raw Sleeves, Classic Raw with Knee Wraps, Single-Ply, and Multi-Ply), records are tracked across Teen (T1: 13–15, T2: 16–17, T3: 18–19), Junior (20–23), Open (24–39), and Masters brackets (M1: 40–44, M2: 45–49, M3: 50–54, M4: 55–59, M5: 60–64, M6: 65–69, M7: 70+).

2. Relative Strength Scoring: Glossbrenner & Reshel Coefficients Explained
To determine Best Overall Lifter awards across lightweights, middleweights, and superheavyweights at GPC National, European, and World Championships, the scoring table utilizes the Glossbrenner Coefficient (alongside the Reshel formula in select European brackets). Developed by mathematician Herb Glossbrenner by blending the Schwartz/Malone and Wilks curves, the Glossbrenner formula avoids the well-documented skew of early Wilks tables that disproportionately favored extreme lightweights and 140+ kg superheavyweights over 90–110 kg middleweights.
A lifter's official total in kilograms is multiplied by their exact bodyweight-specific Glossbrenner factor (calculated to the nearest 0.05 kg recorded on the official scale). In international GPC championships, achieving a 500+ Glossbrenner score in Raw or Classic Raw places an athlete in the upper echelon of European strength competition.
3. Technical Protocol for Ratifying a GPC European or World Record
Setting a regional or gym personal best does not qualify for the international record ledger. Under GPC technical governance, a formal European or World Record can only be registered at a sanctioned National Championship, European Championship, World Championship, or specially designated International Record Breakers meet where three certified International Category referees occupy the head and side chairs.
Furthermore, when an athlete is within striking distance of an existing record on their third attempt, the technical desk permits a fourth "Record Attempt" outside the standard total calculation, or allows the third attempt to be chipped in 0.5 kg or 1.0 kg increments rather than the standard 2.5 kg jump.
Mandatory Verification Steps for Official GPC Record Ratification
- Three International-Badge Referees: All three officiating referees on the platform must hold active GPC International referee certification, and the attempt must pass by majority (2-to-1) or unanimous (3-to-0) white lights.
- Immediate Post-Attempt Equipment & Bar Check: For equipped and classic-wrap records, the technical controller inspects knee wrap length (2.5 m vs. 3.0 m) and suit ply compliance immediately as the lifter exits the platform carpet.
- Calibrated Competition Disc Verification: If a record is broken using non-standard fourth-attempt record chips, the head referee verifies the exact barbell and collar weight on a certified digital scale prior to signing the record certificate.
- Age-Bracket Proof of Identity: Teen, Junior, and Masters (M1–M7) record claimants must present a government-issued passport at weigh-in confirming their exact birth date relative to the championship calendar year.
